Winter and Cold Weather produce a unique set of challenges for your horse. Impaction Colic can occur due to a lack of water intake. Lack of water intake can occur due to frozen water, too cold of water and electrical wiring short causing electricity to flow to the water tank. Therefore it is important to check your horse’s water source every day. Even in the cold weather horses will drink 5 to 8 gallons of water per day

Salt intake can also affect water intake. Salt is essential for body functions and therefore salt should always be available for your horses free choice. In Stamina Plus’s research facility some horses will not eat salt from a salt block and these horses are feed loose salt every day with their grain.
