Stamina plus has finished a 4 month study into the question of MSM toxicity in the horse. This study was started due to abnormal chemistry analysis with a new in house blood chemistry machine. The blood chemistry in question was creatine kinase (CK). After many blood samples on 20 horses both on the new equipment and at reference laboratories the final results show that there is no toxicity to the levels of MSM fed in this study. The abnormal CK were due to the new equipment installed at the research facility.
The take home message from this study is with the new rapid test in house equipment results may not be accurate. If an abnormal CK is found it is important that further samples be sent to reference laboratories before a error is made in the diagnosis.
