Spring is fast approaching and it is now a good idea to evaluate your horse’s body condition. Some horses have had blankets on all winter and they should be removed to brush the horse and evaluate their body condition. Other horses have had no blankets on but have very long hair.
Long winter hair can be deceiving in the actual condition of the horse. My general recommendation is too feel over the rib cage and see if the ribs can be felt. If the ribs can be felt with very little pressure from your fingers then the horse is too thin. The horse is in adequate condition if the ribs can only be felt with firm pressure.
If your horse is thin then now is the time to start increasing hay to bring your horse into adequate body condition. This is even more important if you are going to breed your mare. Along with the increase in hay you can start 2 lbs of oats and a complete Equine Supplement daily.
Spring is also time to De-worm and vaccinate your horse. Discuss with your Veterinarian the appropriate vaccinations for your area.
